I’m a procurement manager, not a brand evangelist. For over six years, I’ve tracked component-level orders for embedded modules, networking hardware and industrial IoT products. That background changed how I read “Qualcomm” on a spec sheet. Here are the Qualcomm-related questions I get most often from B2B buyers and resellers.

Does Qualcomm still make phones?

Not as consumer products. Qualcomm designs Snapdragon processors, 5G and 4G modems, RF front-end components, IoT chips and automotive platforms. Qualcomm also helps create reference devices and development smartphones, but those are aimed at OEMs, software teams and wireless engineers. If a product page says “Qualcomm phone,” it is usually a phone powered by a Snapdragon chipset, not a Qualcomm-produced handset.

In an early project, I asked for a “Qualcomm phone” to run Wi-Fi coexistence tests. My vendor heard “any Android phone with a Snapdragon chip.” I meant the Snapdragon reference unit with the documented driver build and antenna test points. Same words, different meanings. That mistake delayed our lab validation by almost two weeks.

What is a Quick Charge 30 USB wall charger with an EU plug and Qualcomm branding?

Let me separate the terms before you send a PO: Qualcomm owns the Quick Charge technology and logo, but Qualcomm does not build every charger that uses it. A listing such as “Quick Charge 30 USB wall charger EU plug Qualcomm” usually means a third-party adapter that supports Quick Charge 3.0 and provides about 30 W of output. In other words, the three parts of the title—Quick Charge 3.0, 30 W and Qualcomm branding—are often merged into one keyword-friendly phrase.

For EU sales, a charger must have the correct AC plug and legal safety markings for the destination country. As of early January 2025, most listings for this type of adapter still come from accessory brands rather than from Qualcomm itself. For volume orders, ask for the manufacturer’s Quick Charge certification evidence, EU Declaration of Conformity and test report.

In my first year of procurement, I picked the “official Qualcomm charger” listing and skipped the documentation check. The adapter worked, but the paperwork was not clean for an EU product launch. We paid a restocking fee and lost a week. The logo did not remove the compliance risk.

How should I read “Qualcomm collaboration Middle East energy AI IoT”?

I don’t have hard data on specific Middle East energy contracts, so I won’t pretend to know those program details. I do know what happens when such announcements reach a bill of materials.

Energy sites in harsh environments need local decisions. A remote solar or oilfield site cannot afford a huge server for AI. Instead, gateways and sensors use an edge processor with low power plus a cellular uplink. A Qualcomm collaboration can mean that the wireless module or IoT gateway is based on Qualcomm silicon and software. It usually does not mean Qualcomm is the prime contractor building the whole energy-management system.

So if you see the phrase in a tender or a news article, push suppliers for the module SKU, SoC name, modem spec and support window. The collaboration label is a starting point, not a technical specification.

Does Qualcomm make routers? Is Broadcom better?

Qualcomm sells networking SoCs and Wi-Fi platforms to router OEMs, not a retail router under its own name. Broadcom also sells Wi-Fi silicon and has a strong switching portfolio. Which one is better? It depends on the router’s exact feature set, cost target and software support plan. Chipset choice affects performance, but antenna design, thermals, firmware updates and regulatory certifications can matter just as much.

In one RFQ, we wrote “Qualcomm or Broadcom equivalent” and assumed that would simplify the shortlist. Instead, vendors returned products with three different chip families and different Wi-Fi band support. We had to re-test all of them. If we had said “requires 4x4 Wi-Fi, band plan X, firmware updates for Y years,” the comparison would have been cleaner. A brand comparison should happen at the product level, not just the chip level.

Can I buy Qualcomm chips directly from Qualcomm?

Most procurement teams will not issue a Qualcomm PO for a finished device. Qualcomm is a fabless semiconductor company. The standard route for chips is an authorized distributor or a module manufacturer that has integrated Qualcomm components into a usable product. If your team is building a high-volume OEM product, you might work with Qualcomm directly or through a distributor. For evaluation, it is often easier to buy engineering boards and modules from an authorized source.

An off-the-shelf module costs more than a bare chip on the BOM, but it can save engineering time, antenna tuning and certification work. In mid-2024, I priced a custom processor board and a Qualcomm-based module. The custom BOM looked cheaper until I added layout reviews and RF testing. The module won on total-cost basis. That is the view a procurement manager should bring.

Should “Qualcomm inside” be enough for a purchasing decision?

No. A logo does not finish hardware integration. A trustworthy supplier should be able to say: this product uses the Qualcomm chipset, here are the limitations in this enclosure, and here is the exact performance we tested. If the supplier cannot explain why they picked that chipset, pick a different supplier. That honesty boundary is more valuable than a branding sticker.

I have bought excellent devices with Qualcomm silicon, and I have rejected devices with Qualcomm silicon. The rejects were not necessarily bad chips. They were rejected because the vendor could not answer simple integration questions. In procurement, the decision is about the full product, not the logo on the box.
