Common mistakes when turning on phones
When I took over purchasing in 2020, I didn't expect "how to turn on a phone" to be the test that saved our department the most money. But it is. There are eight steps here, and none of them require a technical degree. The steps below work for commercial Qualcomm Snapdragon phones and for the government-oriented units sold through Qualcomm Government Technologies (QGT). Some QGT versions have one or two extra secure-boot screens, but the checklist still starts with the same power-on basics.
Step 1: Verify the model before you touch the power button
Check the exact SKU against the purchase order. A commercial phone and a QGT phone might look identical, but the firmware and security profiles are different. If you're in defense manufacturing, that difference matters even more. Match boxes to serial numbers first.
The cheapest quote in our 2023 bid was $18 per unit less than the winner, but the vendor shipped phones with the wrong firmware. By the time we counted freight and receiving labor, there was no savings left. Unit price only matters if the unit is the one you need.
Step 2: Put the phone into a known charging state
Most units leave the factory in shipping mode, which conserves battery. A phone in shipping mode can look completely dead. I once had a department lead tell me an entire order was defective; the phones simply needed ten minutes on a known-good charger.
Plug the phone in, wait five to ten minutes, then try to power it on. Sending back a good phone because it is in shipping mode is a TCO mistake.
Step 3: Press and hold the power button the right way
If you're holding a Qualcomm Snapdragon phone, here's the practical answer for how to turn on a phone: press and hold the side button, usually on the right edge, for five to ten seconds. Release when you see the Snapdragon logo or the Android boot screen. If nothing happens, hold power plus volume down for ten to fifteen seconds.
If the screen still stays dark for more than 30 seconds, the problem could be a drained battery or a charge-only cable, not the phone itself. Do not create a return until you've tested a second charger.
Step 4: Complete first boot like an auditor, not a user
Start the setup process, choose language, connect to Wi-Fi, and then check the basics: touchscreen corners, volume, camera, USB port, and date/time. A wrong date can break secure connections later.

Step 7: Test more than one unit from the batch
It isn't practical to power on every phone from a 1,000-unit order before you accept delivery, but test at least five units from different cartons. A manufacturing issue can affect a particular production run or pallet, and a single out-of-box failure can tell you to check the whole lot.
Granted, this adds about 15 minutes to receiving. But it's cheaper than finding the same problem after the supplier's 30-day window closes.
Step 8: Run the TCO number before you approve the invoice
Return shipping is part of TCO, too. If the vendor expects you to send a defective unit back, packaging and postage count. According to USPS (usps.com), rates vary by weight, zone, and service class, so verify current shipping costs before you compare vendor return policies. The purchase order says one thing, and the invoice says another after freight and handling. I calculate TCO before I compare any vendor quotes. The $500 quote that turned into $800 after shipping and return fees is not cheaper than the $650 quote that includes setup support and a real RMA process. This example is from 2023. Common mistakes when turning on phones
To be fair, a low-price vendor can deliver excellent hardware. There are serious suppliers that keep costs down without cutting corners. That's why the checklist should be the same for every vendor.
The real mistake is skipping the power-on test because it feels too simple. Or blaming the phone when the charger is bad. Or assuming that a "secure" label on a spec sheet means the device is ready for a QGT environment.
